S3 Coursing Information

In this section you will find information relating to the current S3 coursing timeline and options.

Course choices

At West Calder High School we are committed to providing the best possible support to our young people as they make their course choices, which is why we have a range of support available for every pupil.

Preparation for course choices began with an assembly w/b 17th December where we discussed, in general terms, the options available, including college opportunities.

Pupils have then been thinking about their options over the festive break before returning to some coursing-specific activities in their wellbeing classes.

Designed to support them as they start to think about which courses they would like to take, and indeed the potential career options open to them, these activities are very important. They have included a Wellbeing Lesson on coursing and a follow up activity using My World of Work, all of which are intended to help pupils fill out their course choice form in advance of their coursing interviews.

Each pupil will have a personalised interview with their Head of House, at which they will discuss all the options, based on that pupil's specific needs and aspirations. There will also be an opportunity for parents to attend a drop in session to discuss coursing. Pupils then have a further opportunity to discuss their choices with their parents before the final form is submitted. We have attached an outline of coursing activities and key dates for easy reference.

The purpose of this letter is to make you aware of the process as well as giving you the opportunity to discuss course choices with your child over the next few weeks. To help, we have attached a course choice form and information sheet which is specific to your child.

It would be very helpful if you could go over the course choice form with your child, and then sign it, prior to their coursing interview with their head of house. With the form being signed, we will know that you have discussed the matter with your child and that you are happy with the choices they have made.

This is an exciting and important time for all of our pupils, and we are very much looking forward to helping them make these key coursing choices, putting them on the right track to achieve success.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with your child's Head of House if you have any questions.

Yours faithfully,

Head of House Team
