Course Choice - S2 into S3
At West Calder High School we are committed to providing the best possible support to our young people as they make their course choices, which is why we have a range of support available for every pupil.
Preparation for course choices begins with an assembly on Tuesday 5th March where we will discuss, in general terms, the options available and how that leads into S3 and eventually the Senior Phase. New S3 will study 8 subjects - a choice of 6 subjects plus the required Maths and English. New S3 also receive Core Education periods in Physical Education, Religious and Moral Education and Wellbeing.
New S3 pupils also have access to our Skills Courses (information can be found in the downloads section) and should think carefully about which one they choose which will enable them to further develop their skills.
Pupils will then be able to think about their options whilst participating in some coursing-specific activities in their wellbeing classes. This will help pupils fill out their course choice form in advance of their coursing interviews.
Each pupil will have a personalised interview with their Head of House, at which they will discuss all the options, based on that pupil's specific needs and aspirations. There will also be an opportunity for parents to discuss coursing at Parents' Evening on the 19th March before coursing interviews take place on the 20th, 21st and 22nd March when the final form is submitted.
We have attached an outline of coursing activities, Skills Courses and key dates for easy reference in the downloads section below.
The purpose of this letter is to make you aware of the process as well as giving you the opportunity to discuss course choices with your child over the next few weeks.
It would be very helpful if you could go over the course choice form with your child, and then sign it, prior to their coursing interview with their Head of House. With the form being signed, we will know that you have discussed the matter with your child and that you are happy with the choices they have made.
This is an exciting and important time for all of our pupils, and we are very much looking forward to helping them make these key coursing choices, putting them on the right track to achieve success.
There is lots of helpful information about course choices for both you and your child available on the school website at Information for Parents - S2 Coursing Information. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with your child's Head of House if you have any questions.
