The Scottish Schools (Parent Involvement) Act 2006 makes provision for the involvement of parents in their children's education and in school education generally. The Act also outlines the establishment of a Parent Council made up of parents representing the views of the Parent Forum as a whole.
West Calder High School Parent Council is in place to support everyone at West Calder High School.
Our role is to give the parents/career a voice within the school and to strengthen the partnership between families, school staff, and the wider community. The council are there to support the headteacher and senior management team where they are needed and to help build relationships between the school and the wider communities.
The Parent Council exists to represent parents' views and support the school in improving pupils' education and wellbeing.
All parents, carers or guardians who have a young person at West Calder High School are members of the Parent Forum. Everyone is invited to attend meetings and all contributions are welcomed. Agendas, minutes and a copy of the constitution can be found below.
The West Calder High School Parent Council plays an active role in supporting parental involvement in the work and the life of WCHS. The key aims of the council are:
a) to promote close co-operation and communication between parents and school staff
b) to promote equality, diversity, inclusion and fairness
c) to study and discuss matters of mutual interest relating to the education and welfare of young people
d) to engage in activities which support and advance the education and welfare of young people attending the school
The areas of focus for this sessions parent council are:
A strong Parent Council can:
Improve communication and trust
Support better outcomes for students
Help create a collaborative school environment
Representing Parents' Views
Acts as a voice for all parents/carers in the school.
Gathers opinions, concerns, and suggestions from the wider parent body.
Shares these views with the school leadership (e.g., headteacher, senior staff).
Supporting School Improvement
Works with the school on policies, improvements, and priorities.
Gives input on topics such as:
Curriculum changes
School policies (e.g., behaviour, homework, uniform)
Wellbeing and support systems
Helps ensure decisions consider the parent perspective.
Building Strong Relationships
Encourages positive communication between parents and the school.
Helps create a welcoming and inclusive school community.
Supports mutual understanding between families and staff.
Organising Events and Activities
May plan or help run:
School events (fairs, information evenings, social events)
Fundraising activities
Aims to enhance school life and build community spirit.
Supporting Wider Achievement
Promotes pupils' learning and wellbeing beyond the classroom.
Helps connect the school with local organisations.
Advising and Consulting
Often consulted on important decisions affecting the school.
Provides feedback before changes are implemented.
Helps ensure transparency and shared decision-making.
It does not run the school (that is the role of school leadership).
It does not deal with individual complaints (these follow school procedures).
It acts collectively, not on behalf of single personal issues
