Senior Phase

Senior Phase at West Calder High School

In Scottish education, the Senior Phase refers to the final stage of secondary school, covering S4 to S6 (ages 15-18). It follows the Broad General Education (S1-S3) and is a key period where learners begin to specialise and work towards national qualifications.

At West Calder High School, the Senior Phase is viewed as a three-year experience rather than separate individual years, allowing pupils to plan and progress through their learning in a more flexible and personalised way.

During this phase, learners:

  • Work towards qualifications such as National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher
  • Choose courses based on their interests, strengths and future goals
  • Develop skills for learning, life and work, preparing them for destinations beyond school
  • Explore a range of pathways, including college courses, vocational learning and wider achievement opportunities

West Calder High School emphasises helping all young people move on to a positive and sustained destination, such as employment, training, college or university. Pupils are encouraged to think ahead and consider multiple pathways (for example, having a "Plan A, B and C") to keep their future options open.

Overall, the Senior Phase builds on prior learning and provides greater choice, depth and specialisation, enabling students at West Calder High School to achieve qualifications and gain the skills and experiences they need for their future.
