BYOD

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

Bring Your Own Device  at West Calder High School allows students to use their personal digital devices—such as laptops, tablets, or smartphones—to support their learning in school. This approach helps make lessons more flexible, interactive, and tailored to individual needs.

How BYOD Works

At West Calder High School, students are encouraged to bring a suitable device with them each day. These devices are used in lessons for activities such as:

  • Accessing online learning platforms (e.g. Microsoft Teams or Glow)
  • Completing classwork and homework
  • Conducting research
  • Collaborating with classmates
  • Submitting assignments digitally

To ensure everything runs smoothly, the school provides secure Wi-Fi access, allowing students to connect their devices safely to the school network.

Rules and Expectations

The use of BYOD comes with clear guidelines:

  • Devices must be used only for educational purposes during class time
  • Students must follow the school's acceptable use policy
  • Teachers decide when and how devices should be used in lessons
  • Students are responsible for bringing their device charged and ready to use
  • Safety and respect online are expected at all times

Benefits of BYOD

  • Encourages independent learning
  • Gives students access to a wide range of digital resources
  • Helps develop important digital and ICT skills
  • Supports different learning styles
  • Prepares students for future education and careers
