Learning & Teaching Framework

At West Calder High School, we are committed to providing the highest quality learning, teaching and assessment for all young people. Our approach is designed to develop ambitious, enthusiastic and independent learners who take ownership of their learning and are supported to achieve their full potential.

This policy reflects our strong belief that excellent learning and teaching are at the heart of a successful school. Built through collaboration with staff and pupils, and informed by current educational research, it outlines clear, consistent approaches to classroom practice across the school.

Central to our approach is the creation of positive relationships, inclusive environments and engaging learning experiences that promote curiosity, critical thinking and active participation. Pupils are encouraged to contribute their views and play an active role in shaping their learning, ensuring their voices are heard and valued.

Our "Well P.A.C.E.D." learning model provides a shared framework for high-quality lessons, focusing on clear purpose, active engagement, appropriate challenge and opportunities for learners to demonstrate their understanding.

Through ongoing professional learning, collaboration and effective use of assessment data, we continually review and improve our practice. This ensures that teaching is responsive, innovative and meets the diverse needs of all learners.
