Curriculum for Excellence

Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) is Scotland's national education framework for children and young people aged 3 to 18.

Its purpose is to provide a broad and balanced education that develops not only knowledge, but also the skills, confidence and values that young people need for life beyond school. At the heart of the curriculum are four key aims, often called the four capacities: helping every learner to become a successful learner, a confident individual, a responsible citizen, and an effective contributor.

CfE is designed to offer a broad general education from the early years to the end of S3. During this time, young people learn across eight curriculum areas, including subjects such as languages, mathematics, sciences, social studies and expressive arts. In addition, there is a strong focus on literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing, which are developed across all subjects rather than taught in isolation. This means that pupils practise reading, writing, communication and number skills in a wide range of real-life contexts, helping them to understand how their learning connects to everyday life and future careers.

Learning within CfE is organised through "experiences and outcomes," which describe what children and young people are expected to learn and achieve as they progress. These are grouped into levels—from Early level through to Fourth level—followed by the Senior Phase (S4-S6). Progression is flexible, allowing each young person to move forward at a pace that suits their individual needs and strengths. Teaching approaches emphasise active learning, collaboration and problem-solving, as well as opportunities for personalisation and choice so that learners can explore their interests and build on their talents.

At West Calder High School, Curriculum for Excellence is implemented through a whole-school approach that ensures learning is coherent, relevant and supportive of every pupil. Teachers work together across departments to plan learning experiences that build on prior knowledge and make clear connections between subjects. This collaborative planning helps ensure that pupils experience a smooth progression into the senior phase.

Staff at West Calder High School recognise that every teacher has a role in developing literacy, numeracy and wellbeing, regardless of their subject. As a result, these key skills are regularly revisited and reinforced in lessons across the school. Pupils benefit from a wide range of learning approaches, including group work, independent study, digital learning and real-world projects, which help to build confidence, resilience and independence.

A strong emphasis is placed on creating a positive, inclusive school environment where young people feel safe, respected and supported. Wellbeing and support systems ensure that every pupil is known as an individual, while partnerships with parents, carers and the wider community help to support each learner's development. Assessment is ongoing and designed to support learning, with teachers using a range of evidence—such as classwork, discussions and practical tasks—to monitor progress and plan next steps.

Overall, Curriculum for Excellence at West Calder High School aims to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and personal qualities they need to be successful in school and prepared for future opportunities in further education, employment and life.
