BGE Course Details
S1 Physical Education at West Calder High School is designed to develop confident, resilient and adaptable young people through a concept‑based curriculum with a strong focus on meta‑skill development. Rather than concentrating solely on performance outcomes, our curriculum helps pupils understand how and why they learn, enabling them to transfer skills across activities and beyond PE.
Our learning is centered on two core concepts: Focus and Adapting. These concepts are explored through a wide range of engaging, inclusive and familiar physical activities such as volleyball, basketball, athletics, gymnastics, swimming and fitness. By revisiting these concepts across different contexts, pupils develop physical competence alongside key meta skills including concentration, decision‑making, problem solving, communication, and resilience.
High‑quality learning is supported through effective formative assessment, with regular opportunities for peer and self‑reflection. Pupils are encouraged to evaluate performance, set meaningful targets and take ownership of their progress through their pathways to success, helping them to become reflective and motivated learners.
Teaching and learning in PE is underpinned by the West Calder High School PACED strategy, ensuring lessons are purposeful, active, challenging, and engaging. This approach supports high expectations, consistent learning experiences, and positive outcomes for all pupils.
Our BGE PE programme enables learners to build strong foundations for lifelong participation in physical activity while developing the transferable skills needed for success across the curriculum and in the wider world.

The purpose of the S3 Preparation for National Dance is to allow pupils to build the required skills and knowledge to prepare them for National 5 dance in S3.
The National 5 Dance course in S3 will be 3 periods of practical lessons where we will cover a range of dance styles and explore the choreographic process. We cover 3 dance styles: Jazz, Hip-Hop/Commercial and Contemporary in S3 and complete a choreography block routine in a small group based on a theme of their choice.
Young people are also given the opportunity to take part in school displays and local dance competitions to develop their confidence and teamwork skills.
As part of S3 dance for the 26/27 session young people will receive 1 period of cheer dance a week.
Over this programme of work young people will gain skills and experience required to be prepared to enter National 5 dance and National 5 PE.
Our Prep for National course is designed to support pupils as they transition into certificated courses at National level. It provides a structured and supportive environment where learners build the knowledge, skills, and confidence required for success in National qualifications.
The course is delivered through a series of focused learning blocks. Pupils begin by exploring factors impacting performance (mental, emotional, social and physical), developing an understanding of key subfactors such as anxiety, decision making, communication, and fitness components. Learners are introduced to the Personal Development Plan (PDP) and the cycle of analysis, enabling them to identify strengths and areas for improvement, and explain how these impact both individual and team performance.
Pupils then move on to data collection, where they learn why data is gathered before creating a PDP and how to use a range of methods (including observation schedules and fitness testing). They develop an understanding of qualitative and quantitative data and learn how to select appropriate methods to evaluate performance.
In the next stage, learners explore approaches to development, selecting and applying strategies such as mental techniques (e.g. positive self-talk), team-building activities, and fitness training methods to support improvement. They then create and begin to implement their own PDP.
Finally, pupils apply their learning through performance development in a range of activities, including volleyball, netball, football and basketball. The emphasis is on developing both practical skills and game understanding, allowing learners to transfer their knowledge into real performance situations.
Learning is delivered through a variety of engaging activities, with regular feedback to help pupils track their progress and identify next steps. By the end of the course, learners are well prepared to move on to National courses, equipped with the skills and mindset needed to achieve their full potential.
