Accounting

BGE Accounting introduces learners to key financial and management accounting concepts, building a solid foundation in National 5 level skills. The course develops essential knowledge in how businesses record financial transactions and use costing information to support effective decision-making. In financial accounting, learners focus on accurately recording and presenting financial information. They develop skills in ledger entries using double-entry bookkeeping, prepare a trial balance to check accuracy, and produce a Statement of Financial Position to understand an organisations assets, liabilities, and overall financial position. In management accounting, students explore how businesses analyse and control costs. This includes FIFO inventory management to value stock, labour remuneration to calculate the cost of labour, and job costing to determine the total cost of specific jobs. Learners also examine overhead analysis, understanding how indirect costs are allocated and managed to improve efficiency and profitability. Together, these topics equip learners with practical financial skills, strong numeracy, and analytical thinking, preparing them for progression into National 5 Accounting and real-world business contexts.

The communication element focuses on creating clear, professional documents suitable for a range of business purposes. Learners will develop their ability to produce well-structured emails, presentations and use e-diary, while improving their attention to detail, accuracy, and presentation. Study of this course promotes responsibility and creativity, whilst empowering learners to use digital applications effectively.

In the Marketing unit, learners will focus on how businesses identify and satisfy customer needs. They will explore market research techniques and evaluate the marketing mix for a range of different organisations. To bring learning to life, students will take part in an enterprise challenge, where they will work in teams to create, market, and evaluate their own business idea.
