BGE Courses
BGE Course Details
S1 pupils will develop key maths skills across topics such as whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages and integers, including using the four operations, rounding and converting between forms. They will also explore algebra, money, symmetry, factors and multiples, angles in 2D shapes, as well as length and area. Confidence and understanding will be built through class work, revision and assessments taking place throughout the session, including a diagnostic assessment at the start of term, followed by further assessments at Christmas and Spring.
Building on their S1 learning, S2 pupils will extend their maths skills across topics such as circle measures, volume, statistics and ratio, while further developing their understanding of equations and problem-solving. They will continue to explore areas such as money, symmetry, area, scale, Pythagoras' theorem and speed-distance-time, alongside regular revision and progress checks on topics, followed by further assessments at Christmas and Spring.
In S3, all pupils will follow the National 4 Mathematics course, progressing at a pace that reflects their individual learning needs and development. The course covers key areas such as number processes, fractions, decimals and percentages, algebra, geometry, measurement, graphs and data handling, while also building problem-solving skills. Pupils who are making strong progress towards National 5 Mathematics will aim to complete the National 4 course by October/November, whereas others may continue working through the course over a longer period.
In the early stages of the year, we will continue to gather evidence from classwork, assessments and overall progress to support decisions on whether pupils progress to National 5 Mathematics, National 5 Applications of Mathematics, or continue with National 4 Mathematics.
